28 July 2017   May 2017: Passengers up 8% and 4% respectively in Asia-Pacific and Middle East


[July 28, 2017 – Hong Kong] Passengers traveling through the Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern airports in May grew by +7.9% and +4.1% respectively compared to the same period last year.


In China, both domestic and international passenger travels in May showed strong results likely boosted by vacation travels during national holidays. Shijiazhuang (SJW) +28.1%, Tianjin (TSN) +24.3% and Nanjing (NKG) +19.7% continued to expand at a fast pace delivering substantial increase from last year.


In India, while the overall pace of increase in domestic passenger traffic continued to moderate, growth in May rebounded to above 15%, the highest since January. A number of small to medium sized airports delivered outstanding gains: Bhubaneswar (BBI) +43.1%, Guwahati (GAU) +40.1% and Calcutta (CCU) +34.9%. Delhi (DEL), the largest airport in India, recorded +14.3% growth, the highest among major hub airports in the Asia-Pacific region.


Elsewhere in the region, Japan’s international passenger traffic also benefited from national holidays in the month and experienced robust growth in May. Fukuoka (FUK) recorded the highest growth in Japan at +16.6%.


In the Middle East, passenger traffic showed mixed results. While pace of growth eased at the three largest hubs: Dubai (DXB) +1.9%, Doha (DOH) +6.1% and Abu Dhabi (AUH)         -2%, significant increases were observed at Madinah (MED) +24.9% and Muscat (MCT) +14.7%.


In terms of air freight, Asia-Pacific grew +10.8% while the Middle East grew +8.4% in May.


Exports continued to drive strong air freight growth in the Asia-Pacific: Hong Kong (HKG) +12.9%, Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +15.6% and Seoul Incheon (ICN) +8.8%. In the Middle East, the pace of growth continued to soften. The largest hub in the region, Dubai (DXB) grew by +2.6%. Doha (DOH) was the exception, delivering growth of +24.2% for the month.
