Whitepaper: Additional East Area Gets Operational at GMR Hyderabad International Airport

  • 2023-11-03

Uniform economic reforms, sustained economic growth, political stability and technological innovations; along with the rapidly growing middle- class population with increasing purchasing power have transformed the face of new India. This remarkable growth has led India to become the third- largest aviation market globally. India is expected to become the fourth largest global travel spender by 2030 and is anticipated to complete 5 billion trips annually by the same year. As the number of air travelers continues to rise, there has been a surge in the development of new routes both within India and abroad. To cater to this rising demand in passenger traffic and augment the passenger handling capacity, Hyderabad International Airport has embarked on a significant phase- wise expansion to cater well beyond 34 million passengers.

  • Presently the passenger terminal spanning 2,17,664 Sqm (23.42 lakh Sqft) is operational.
  • The expanded Hyderabad International Airport will include the construction of an additional built-up area that would be integrated with the existing Integrated Terminal Building (at the concourse & piers) with additional infrastructure at airside and landside area.
  • Throughout the phase-wise expansion, the Hyderabad Airport has unveiled a revamped passenger terminal. This enhanced terminal now features additional check-in counters, security-screening machines, emigration counters and immigration counters. The expanded domestic and international pier buildings now have revamped lounges, retail, and F&B outlets as well. Additional infrastructure has also been added to the east and west pier buildings to ensure smooth operations. Moreover, a new arrival hall with a beautiful indoor landscape, water bodies, and designed feature walls has been introduced providing passengers with a soothing experience. That’s not all! A new walk-through duty-free space with leading global brands and products has further enriched the passenger experience. In fact, Hyderabad Duty Free is one of the largest arrival duty free in India.
  • Travelers with a domestic layover can conveniently make a reduced congestion and time efficient transfer from one domestic area to another within the expanded space. Spread across 3511 square meters, the dedicated space features three automatic tray retrieval Systems (ATRS), which can be expanded to six ATRS, and a separate screening machine exclusively for staff. This transit area will significantly reduce the Minimum Connection Time (MCT) for transfer movements, thereby allowing domestic passengers to transit between connecting flights with a shorter time gap before boarding.
  • In addition to a revamped terminal, the expansion project also involves augmentation of airside areas. Additional 85 aircraft stand, ground service equipment tunnel, 4 new rapid taxiways, a new parallel taxiway, implementation of technology solutions like Category II Airfield Ground Lighting system with LEDs, Advanced Airfield Lighting Control, and monitoring system (ALCMS) and Individual Lamp Control and Monitoring Systems (ILCMS) to name a few along with multiple sustainable practices have been added at the airside
  • In the fourth phase, Hyderabad International Airport has now operationalized the additional East area to facilitate seamless passenger movement. This new additional area spanning across 56,474 Sqm (6.07 lakh Sqft) has been integrated with the existing terminal. With this expansion, a total area of 2,74,118 Sqm (29.50 lakh Sqft) will be operationalized

  • To facilitate seamless passenger flow, the additional area will connect the departure passengers to departure gates and arrival passengers to baggage reclaim services and beyond.
  • The space will offer an improved passenger experience equipped with 24 remote bus domestic departure gates and arrival facilities, 12 passenger boarding aero bridges, contact stands, and a domestic-to-domestic (D-D) transfer area. Furthermore, this area is equipped with three ATRS machines, one screening machine and 12 departure gates.

  • In addition, spread across 3,055 Sqm, a dedicated mezzanine floor welcoming the passengers with variety of consumer goods and mouth licking delicacies from renowned retail and F&B brands have been created for better experiences for all passenger groups.
  • The entire newly built expanded east area is equipped with 22 escalators, 22 elevators, 2 travellators, 19 staircases, 9 restrooms designed for men, 9 restrooms tailored for women and 2 ablution restrooms
  • The airport design is inspired by the wings of an “INDIAN ROLLER” bird, also a symbolic State Bird of Telangana “PALA PITTA” that signifies the most prominent elements of the airport -functionality, atmosphere, and flexibility.

  • This Integrated terminal at Hyderabad International Airport is a unique facility in the entire South and Central India, very unlike the other International Airports in the region, which have multiple terminals. The integrated terminal will further add value to airlines in choosing Hyderabad International Airport as a preferred Hub.

Leveraging the natural location advantage and multi-modal connectivity, Hyderabad International Airport with its extensive route network and choice of airlines for its passengers, has firmly established itself as the ‘Gateway of Choice’ in South and Central India.
