Macau International Airport Successfully Renewed Level 2 “Reduction” of Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Programme

  • 2023-06-21

Macau International Airport (MIA) successfully renewed in May 2023 the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) at Level 2 “Reduction”. Since May 2014, MIA had been maintaining the Level 2 “Reduction” accreditation of this Programme upon verification of our carbon footprints by the ACA appointed verifier.

The ACA Programme was firstly launched by the Airports Council International (ACI) in 2009, it aims to encourage airports to implement best practices in minimizing their impacts from daily operations on the climate by reducing their carbon footprints.

During the pandemic, aircraft movements and passengers traffic were reduced significantly. Regardless, MIA spares no effort on reducing carbon emission through implementing different environmental projects and measures in accordance with the Carbon Management Plan. These include replacement of aging chillers in the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) with energy efficient models which consume environmental friendly refrigerants, replacement of aging vehicles with low or no emission vehicles, implementation of seasonal lighting on-off management in PTB according to flights slot, maximizing the variety of recycling wastes generated from daily operations, etc. By performing the above actions, the total carbon emissions of MIA in 2022 reduced 39% by comparing to the average of total carbon emissions of the previous 3 years.

Airport Environmental Office, secretariat to the Airport Environmental Executive Committee of MIA will continue to work with local community, our stakeholders and airport entities to actively combat the climate change and strive for further emission reduction, in order to support the “Dual Carbon Goals” established in our country.
