This week, the global community of airport innovators, start-ups, visionary thinkers, researchers and top tech minds gathers at Rome Fiumicino Airport for AIRPORTS INNOVATE 2024. Mangaluru International Airport in a milestone moment completed recarpeting work on its 2.45-kilometre-long runway 06-24 on May 28. The unique aspect of the project, aimed at meeting compliance norms laid down by aviation safety regulator and completed in 75-working days from March 10, is the flexible overlay of asphalt on rigid runway, which is the first of its kind in India. The airport initiated the preliminary survey work about the project on January 27.
Bahrain International Airport (BIA) has further enhanced its food & beverage (F&B) offerings with the launch of Runway (R) 12, a bespoke sports lounge overlooking the concourse, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) announced. BAC Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah inaugurated the venue alongside SSP EEME CEO and Chief Business Development & Strategy Officer, Mark Angela; SSP Managing Director for Eastern Europe and Middle East, George Antoniou; Buhindi Group CEO, Ahmed Yaqoob; SSP Bahrain General Manager, Tomas de Prat Gay; and Group Business Development & Strategy Manager, Mark Knowlden.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport, operated by GMR Airports Ltd., has achieved a global feat by recording the most punctual airport in the world. In a recently released report by the aviation analytical firm Cirium, GMR Hyderabad International Airport recorded 90.43 percent On-Time Performance, for the month of March’23. HYD airport is the only airport in the world to cross the 90 % mark.
Hong Kong Air Cargo Industry Services Limited (Hacis), the value-added logistics arm of Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), has opened a new climate-controlled facility – “Cool Zone” – to cater for the increasing volumes of perishable and temperature-sensitive e-commerce traffic transiting Hong Kong.
Mangaluru International Airport dedicated its Integrated Cargo Terminal (ICT) for public use on May 1. Spread over an area of 1,891 sq.m, including 1,200 sq mt area for international cargo and the rest for domestic, the ICT can manage 9,000 tonnes of international and domestic cargo per annum. The airport started operations at the ICT by managing domestic inbound and outbound cargo on the opening day and international cargo will follow suit.
The $110 million project will include significant upgrades to the airport's existing terminal building, providing a world-class passenger experience for the region. Dr Peter Cock, CEO of Newcastle Airport, expressed his excitement about the project. "We’re thrilled to have Construction Control on board for this project which is a game changer for our community and is critical for our region as we move towards true global connectivity.
The Labour Day holiday is approaching. It is expected that about 9 million passengers travelling by air during Labour Day holiday according to data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). In terms of air passenger markets, domestic and foreign airlines are expected to operate 3,500 international flights during the Labour Day holiday, while it is estimated that domestic flights will reach 65,000 and the supply of capacity is expected to exceed the level of the same period in 2019.
SkyPier at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will commence on 28 April the trial of speedy ferry services serving Pazhou in Guangzhou, connecting the restricted area of HKIA to the downtown of Guangzhou. The new ferry services offer international business parties, members of the exhibition and convention sectors and Guangzhou residents a hassle-free journey to and from Guangzhou and destinations worldwide via HKIA.
