A Milestone of Taoyuan Airport’s Traffic Volume in 2023
- 2023-05-12
On 9 May, Taoyuan Airport’s 2023 traffic volume exceeded 10 million, a milestone after the Taiwan government opened its border on 13 October 2022.
Since the adoption of open border policy in the end of 2022, Taoyuan Airport’s average daily passenger number kept growing, reaching 910,000 in April 2023. The current daily traffic is 68.6% of the 2019 level. We expect the overall 2023 passenger traffic to reach 28 million, which is 58% of the 2019 peak, 48 million.
Crucially, the government’s support of airport operation during the pandemic paved the way for traffic growth in 2023. Between February 2020 and December 2022, a special budget of NTD 23.8 billion from the government subsidized more than 130 airport stakeholders to maintain basic operation. Given this operational foundation, at the end of April 2023, 79% of retailors and food & beverage providers in Taoyuan Airport are able to open quickly and welcome rebounding business opportunities in the post-pandemic era.
Taoyuan Airport also took advantage of the past two years to unfold the construction of T3, upgrade the infrastructure of two terminals, and design the 3 runway. T3 is aimed for completion in 2026, at that time enabling Taoyuan Airport to serve more passengers with a higher service level.
