ACI APAC & MID Champions Sustainable Airport Operations

ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East continued to advocate for environmental sustainability at the ICAO 8th Meeting of the Aerodromes Operations and Planning Sub-Group (AOP/SG/8), held at the ICAO Asia and Pacific Regional Office, Bangkok, Thailand on the 15 – 19 July 2024.

 

 

Representing ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, Mr. Gidae SHIN, Special Project Officer, presented a Working Paper titled “Elimination of Single-Use Plastic and Biodiversity Management at Airports” on how airports could contribute to the goal of eliminating waste going to landfill and preserving biodiversity in the region, all the while without compromising aerodrome safety, particularly in the area of wildlife hazard control.


The objective of this paper was to share how human-induced impact of biodiversity and pollution caused by single use-plastic and what ACI is doing to promote best practices in sustainable waste management and conserving biodiversity through airports recognition and publication.

 

 

At the AOP/SG/8, Mr. Shin noted the ACI publication “Green Airports Recognition 2023 & 2024”, of which he discussed how airports can contribute to the goal of eliminating waste going to landfills and conserving biodiversity in the region. Moreover, he highlighted how airports can preserve biodiversity without compromising the safety of aircraft operations was also addressed in Shin’s presentation.


The presentation was a collective effort with the best practices of ACI APAC & MID’s members who participated in the ACI APAC & MID’s Green Airports Recognition Programme, our key environmental initiative.


Around 100 participants took part in the meeting, to discuss on-going safety operation in the industry.


The Ninth Meeting of the AOP/SG would be held in June/July 2025.
