ACI APAC & MID Regional Aviation Security Committee advocates for adoption of technology to enhance airport security

Adoption of technology for enhanced airport security remained on the top agenda at the 31^st ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Aviation Security Committee (RASC) that convened in Bangkok from 7-9 November 2023. 

Over the two-day meeting, the committee members discussed various topics that have been top priorities for many airports in the region in recent years, including the use of artificial intelligence in screening, adoption of automated technologies at security checkpoint, incorporation of security considerations in airport master planning, countermeasures for emerging security threats, and more. 

The meeting was attended by 50 security experts from airports and World Business Partners (WBP) in the region, which signifies the importance of improving aviation security in the region. 

The committee also extensively discussed the rapid evolution of landside security over the past years and the growing challenges for many airports in protecting their landside areas from possible attacks. A number of committee members were invited to make presentations to share best practices for addressing some of the common challenges faced by airports in relation to landside protection, including the gathering of crowds inside the terminal building, limitations in infrastructure design, coordination with multiple stakeholders for emergency response, and insufficient blast mitigation measures. 

Apart from landside security, the committee also agreed that other emerging threats, such as drones, insider threat  and cybersecurity, should remain a priority in the airport’s security strategy and should continue to be discussed in future RASC meetings.  

The meeting concluded with an airport tour of  Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). The next RASC meeting will be held in May 2024 in Muscat, Oman.
