ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East welcomes Commission’s decision approving Auckland Airport's investment plan
- 2024-04-04
- The long-awaited decision will boost connectivity, enhance passenger experience and drive socio-economic development in New Zealand
- Auckland Airport’s consultation processes are robust and transparent, in line with global best practices
- Allegations of arbitrary pricing or manipulation of regulatory processes are baseless and misleading
Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), the association representing over 600 airports from 45 countries/territories, expressed strong support for Auckland Airport's infrastructure development plans, and welcomed the New Zealand Commerce Commission's recent decision on the airport's 2022-2027 pricing event.
ACI APAC & MID endorsed the New Zealand Commerce Commission’s findings, confirming that Auckland Airport’s $6.6 billion investment plan is well-justified. The Association emphasised that the airport’s pricing proposal was developed through a rigorous and transparent consultation process with all aviation stakeholders, including airlines, and adheres to the highest global regulatory standards.
Welcoming the decision, Mr. Stefano Baronci, Director General, ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, said: "ACI APAC & MID stands firmly with Auckland Airport and its commitment to developing infrastructure as we believe their plans are in the best interests of the airport, airlines, passengers and communities they serve. The Commission's assessment confirms that the airport's plans are both justified and essential for airport's future growth and the country’s long-term socio-economic development.”
“We strongly believe that Auckland Airport’s adjusted charges, bringing target returns within the recommended regulatory range, are clear evidence of the effectiveness and responsiveness of the regulatory framework. Allegations of arbitrary pricing or manipulation of regulatory processes are baseless and misleading,” Mr. Baronci added.
ACI APAC & MID reaffirms that non-aeronautical revenues, including those generated from retail, food and beverage, and other airport services, are crucial for ensuring the financial sustainability of airports. These revenues reduce airports' dependence on aeronautical charges, which in turn helps keep air travel more affordable.
ACI fully supports Auckland Airport’s transparent, well-managed, and inclusive approach, consistently delivering value for passengers, airlines, and the broader economy of New Zealand.
