Fiji Airports Installs Solar-powered Systems

  • 2025-03-11

Fiji Airports is delighted to announce a series of its sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing carbon footprint at its airport facilities.

These initiatives included the installation of solar-powered supply and lighting systems at the Nadi International Airport and four of the main domestic airports that we manage on behalf of the government.
Fiji Airports chief executive Mesake Nawari says this important sustainability project aligns with Fiji Airports' goal of supporting the nation's transition to cleaner energy sources, enhance energy efficiency and drive down operational costs.

“The installation of solar panels at both Nadi and outer airports marks an important step in our sustainability journey,” Mr Nawari said.

“A commitment to sustainability is guided by our understanding of the critical impact that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have on climate change and the urgent need for action.
This project is a part of our continued efforts to create a greener, more sustainable future for both the airport facilities and the communities we serve.”

The CEO says this most recent sustainability investment also speaks volume of our commitment to our Environment Policy which states that we will include environmental and ethical considerations in investment decisions where appropriate.

The installation project conducted mainly by Fiji Airports Electrical & Mechanical technicians included fitting of 33kilowatts hybrid solar system at the Nadi International Airport to power the 14 electric vehicles which we acquired last year.

Solar panel installations at the Waiqele Airport on Labasa, Savusavu Airport, Matei on Taveuni and Rotuma Airport also form part of this exciting environmental development project.

“The Electric Vehicle (EV) program will not be fully realized if EVs continue to charge using electricity from the grid or diesel generators, as both still rely on fossil fuels.

“To complete the cycle of the Carbon Emission initiative, Fiji Airports has installed a solar system to power the EVs sustainably.
“We’ve also enhanced power efficiency by combining the use of direct photovoltaic energy to charge EVs during the day with the storage of surplus energy in a battery bank which is used to power streetlights on the Nadi International Airport car park area and external signage at night.
“Therefore, we are focused on reducing carbon emissions generated by our operations by investing in solar panels.”
All streetlights at the Fiji Airports Estate Compound (formerly known as CAAF compound) have also being converted to solar streetlights.

Mr Nawari added the 3.5 Megawatts solar farm project is progressing and will significantly increase Fiji Airports renewable energy generation capacity.
