First ever in Japan - A fully Automated System using AI to be Installed on Boarding Bridge at ITAMI

  • 2022-06-23

Kansai Airports is excited to announce its implementation at Osaka International Airport (ITAMI) of a fully automated system using AI to attach boarding bridges to aircraft automatically.

This system recognizes aircraft doors using AI and image recognition technology, and completely automates the process of  installing the boarding bridge with just a touch of a button. The boarding bridge  is a movable passage that connects the terminal building with the aircraft and is used for boarding and  disembarkation. Since the existing boarding bridge is operated by a human, the accuracy of installation  depends on the skill of the individual. Full automation improves safety by facilitating smooth boarding and disembarkation of passengers and preventing human error. Kansai Airports Group will make continued efforts to offer passengers a new travel experience in a more comfortable and pleasant airport environment.

  • Installation period: June 27, 2022 to June 30, 2024
  • Target bridge: Two boarding bridges (No.13B and No.18A)
  • Development & installation by: ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd.
  • Expected effect:
  1. Operability: Homogeneous process of boarding bridge attachment that does not depend on the skill of the individual operator
  2. Efficiency: By eliminating the need for re-fitting, etc., flight operations can be maintained on time and waiting times for passengers can be reduced.
  3. Safety: Prevents human errors using AI and image recognition technology - Comparison with existing preset*1 running
