GMR Hyderabad International Airport Upgrades Its Runway to CAT II Instrument Landing System (ILS) for Improved Operational Efficiency

  • 2025-02-17

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) announced the successful installation and commissioning of advanced navigational infrastructure at GMR Hyderabad International Airport (RGIA), marking a significant advancement in the facility's operational capabilities and safety protocols.

The airport has completed the installation and commissioning of  Category II Instrument Landing System (ILS) and associated runway lighting system on the primary runway. This sophisticated system, commissioned recently enables aircraft to safely land in challenging visibility conditions as low as 300 meters (RVR). Category II ILS represents a significant upgrade from Category I systems, providing pilots with more precise guidance through a combination of highly accurate radio signals and advanced ground lighting systems. This enhanced capability is crucial during adverse weather conditions, particularly in fog or when visual references are severely limited below CAT I conditions.

GHIAL has also received approval from DGCA to upgrade status of secondary runway to CAT I, which will enhance its operational capabilities to operate up to RVR of 550 Meter during any contingency on the main runway.

Commenting on this significant upgrade, Mr. Pradeep Panicker, CEO GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited stated, "The implementation of these advanced navigational systems represents a significant milestone in GMR Hyderabad International Airport’s technological infrastructure development. This enhancement substantially elevates our operational parameters while ensuring adherence to the highest safety standards in aviation operations."

The new systems helps in reducing disruptions during low visibility leading to inconvenience to passengers and enhancing operational safety. The upgrades comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) specifications and have received all necessary certifications from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

This upgrade demonstrates the airport's dedication to maintaining its prominence in Indian aviation and ensuring consistent service for both domestic and international operations.
