HKIA Cargo Throughput Sees Significant Growth in January

  • 20 Feb 2018

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded strong growth in cargo throughput in January, handling 410,000 tonnes with a year-on-year surge of 9.9%. During the month, flight movements increased 1.9% to 35,985 while passenger throughput slightly decreased 0.9% to 6.13 million compared with the same month in 2017.

As the Chinese New Year period fell in January in 2017 but February this year, Hong Kong resident travel in January declined by 8% year-on-yearly, resulting in the slight drop in total passenger traffic in the month. Passenger traffic to/from Southeast Asia and Taiwan recorded the most significant decreases. A more meaningful comparison of traffic performance can be made when the combined statistics for the first two months of 2018 are available.

On the cargo front, transshipments and imports registered 14% and 10% year-on-year growth, respectively, contributing most to the growth. Amongst the key trading regions, traffic to/from Europe and India increased most significantly in the month.

On a 12-month rolling basis, HKIA handled 4.97 million tonnes of cargo, 72.8 million passengers and 421,300 flight movements, registering growth of 9.7%, 2.9% and 2.3% respectively year on year.

Steven Yiu, Acting Deputy Director, Service Delivery, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), remarked, “The airport community, as always, strives to maintain smooth operations at HKIA during the festive seasons. Over the Chinese New Year holiday travel peak period, airlines have scheduled 206 additional flights to cope with the demand, with the most popular destinations being Sapporo, Osaka and Tianjin. Operations were smooth during the first few days of the Chinese New Year holiday period. We are also delighted to welcome and entertain passengers from all over the world by staging festive performances in the terminal area.”

Meanwhile, the new Car Park 5 has been opened since 9 February, providing 460 parking spaces for hourly, daily and long-term parking for private cars.
