Kannur International Airport Reports Resilient Performance in October 2023 Despite Aviation Challenges

  • 2023-11-14

Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) showcased remarkable resilience in its October 2023 performance, navigating through a challenging aviation landscape. Despite facing a 9% decline in Air Traffic Movements due to ongoing airline crises, the airport experienced a commendable recovery in passenger footfall, matching the year-on-year comparison.

In a month-on-month analysis, the international sectors at KIAL witnessed a combined 6% surge in passenger traffic. Noteworthy growth was observed in key international routes, with Bahrain, Sharjah, Doha, and Dubai leading the charts. Bahrain, in particular, recorded double-digit growth in passenger traffic, solidifying its position as a pivotal hub.

Further emphasizing the positive trends, Bahrain and Jeddah exhibited impressive growth in the passenger load factor, with 12% and 11% increases, respectively, compared to the previous month. Bahrain stood out with a staggering 70% growth in load factor compared to the same period last year. Doha and Kuwait also posted substantial gains, registering 46% and 34% growth in load factor, respectively, in year-on-year comparisons.

A remarkable achievement for KIAL was the consistent high performance of several international routes even amidst the challenges of the lean international season. Sharjah, Dubai, Muscat, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, Doha, and Bahrain all boasted an average load factor of above 80% for the month, underscoring the airport's strong connectivity and appeal.

On the domestic front, Chennai, Bangalore, and Cochin showed positive momentum in passenger traffic compared to the previous year, contributing to the overall resilience and diversity of KIAL's operations.

Looking ahead, KIAL is set to welcome Air India Express, which is commencing domestic operations from Kannur in November. The airline will operate twice-weekly flights to Trivandrum and daily flights to Bangalore. The Bangalore flights will offer passengers connections to prominent domestic destinations such as Lucknow, Pune, Mumbai, Goa, and Kolkata, expanding travel options for the region. Additionally, these flights will provide convenient connections to far-east destinations, enhancing Kannur International Airport's status as a key gateway.

Despite the challenges faced by the aviation industry, Kannur International Airport Limited's October 2023 performance reflects its adaptability and strategic positioning in the dynamic air travel landscape. The airport continues to play a crucial role in fostering connectivity and economic growth for the region.
