Kansai Airports and Hannan City on “the Osaka Bay Sea Forest (Seaweed Bed) Conservation and Restoration Project”; Seaweeds from Kansai International Airport were transplanted to Hannan City

  • 2023-04-25

Kansai Airports is delighted to announce that seaweeds taken from Kansai International Airport were transplanted to Hannan City as part of the Osaka Bay Sea Forest (Seaweed Bed) Conservation and Restoration Project, which had been registered to the “TEAM EXPO 2025” Program Co-Creation Challenge of Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Kansai International Airport (KIX) is the world's first full-scale offshore airport, built by reclaiming the land 5 km off the coast of Senshu with the aim of making it an environmentally friendly airport since itsopening. We have been actively working to create a rich seaweed bed environment around the airport islands in order to create habitats for marine organisms in Osaka Bay. When the KIX islands were built, various measures were actively implemented, such as adopting gently sloping rubble mound seawalls for most of the seawalls, and we still continue our efforts to maintain and expand a good seaweed environment. The seaweed bed around KIX accounts for about 20% of the seaweed beds in Osaka Bay, providing habitats for a variety of fish and shellfish. We hope that these efforts in collaboration with Hannan City, which has also been proactively engaged in marine environment conservation, will help build the future of the entire Osaka Bay.

Kansai Airports Group continues to work as one to contribute to a sustainable society through operating our airports.
