Mangaluru International Airport Adds to ‘Green’ Quotient With Switch Over to Led Lights

  • 2022-12-14

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed, averred Mahatma Gandhi.

This has a true ring to them as India and Mangaluru International Airport observed National Energy Conservation Day 2022 on December 14. Bureau of Energy Efficiency has been leading the celebrations of National Energy Conservation Day annually in India on December 14 since 1991.

MIA has installed 4400 LED lights which amounts to 95.86% conversion. This results in a saving of 163680 kWh/year vis-à-vis conventional lights as per comparison reference drawn from US Environment Protection Agency and other government sources. From the perspective of energy conserved by planting trees and the trees in turn retaining CO2 to release O2, using LED lights has resulted in equivalent of CO2 retained by 5800 trees.

To elaborate further from conservation point of view at MIA in its true perspective, fathom this. If one take energy versus. per capita energy consumption of the state, converting LED at the airport has resulted in energy savings equivalent to 15 times per capita energy consumption of Karnataka. This ‘Green’ act by MIA has resulted energy savings that is equivalent to average energy consumption of 36 households in India.

If one views this vis-à-vis energy versus passengers CO2 emission, conversion of LED has resulted in reduction of CO2 Emission which is equivalent to CO2 emitted by 560 passengers having round trips from Mangaluru to New Delhi. Conversion of LED has also resulted in reduction of CO2 Emission which is equivalent to CO2 emitted by three flights having round trip from Mangaluru to Delhi at an aerial distance of 3496kms.

The above is only a reaffirmation of plans by Mangaluru International Airport to push for sustainable development in a newer way. Apart from the above-mentioned savings from the seemingly simple act of switching over to LEDs, the airport has also taken the lead to switch over to electric vehicles where the option is available. Various energy conservation methods are also in use to achieve the goal net zero emissions in future.
