Melbourne Airport Launches Integrated Hidden Disability program

  • 15 Sep 2019

Travellers with a hidden disability will find it easier to navigate their way through Melbourne Airport thanks to a new integrated hidden disability program.

The program, which is the first of its kind for an Australian airport, consists of a lanyard system that alerts airport staff to travellers needing additional assistance throughout terminals 1 to 4.

Sensory maps and social stories have also been developed, providing a step-by-step guide on how to fly through Melbourne Airport’s International Terminal.

The airport’s Chief of Aviation Andrew Gardiner said 18.5 per cent of the population within Australia lives with a disability, however only 4.4 per cent use a wheelchair or mobility aid.

“A significant segment of travellers require an additional level of support, and this program aims to take the stress out of travel for those who need it most,” said Mr Gardiner.

“By offering clear pictorial guides in the form of social stories we are able to paint a picture of the whole airport experience from what to pack, where to get dropped off and how to check-in right through to security screening and boarding an aircraft.

“Travellers and their loved ones can also review our sensory maps which highlight busy areas and potential trigger points.

“Visitors can also order lanyards via our website so airport staff can discreetly identify those that need additional support.”

Mr Gardiner said the airport gained valuable insights from industry leaders, people living with hidden disability and carers, and used that information to create the hidden disability program.

“We used industry insights and invited families in to trial the program to ensure the tools met the needs of travellers,” said Mr Gardiner.

“We feel this program could make a real difference to passengers, especially those with young children, and could open up travel opportunities for those that found it too overwhelming in the past.”

Melbourne Airport’s hidden disability program will assist those who live with anxiety disorders, autism, dyslexia and dementia.
