Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic and a surge in infections across the country, the number of passenger flights remained sluggish. Although international freight movements reached an all-time high for a calendar year, total and domestic aircraft movements of the three airports were lower than last year’s results.

Total aircraft movements at the three airports were 188,291 (-9% vs 2020, -50% vs 2019), of which domestic aircraft movements were 153,163 (-1% vs 2020, -30% vs 2019).

International freight movements reached a record high for a calendar year at 27,816*1 (+24% YoY).

Passenger Traffic: KIX, ITAMI, KOBE
Total passenger traffic and domestic passenger traffic were below last year’s results, affected by ongoing border restrictions imposed by various countries amid the variant threat as well as the spread of infections and state of emergency declarations across Japan.

Total passenger traffic at the three airports was 11.46 million (-28% vs 2020, -78% vs 2019). Domestic passenger traffic at the three airports was 11.21 million (-9% vs 2020, -58% vs 2019).

KIX Aircraft Movement

Total cargo volume : 814,453 tons（+15% vs 2020, +6% vs 2019）
International cargo volume: 808,596 tons（+15% vs 2020, +7% vs 2019）

ITAMI Aircraft Movement

Domestic aircraft movements: 93,487（-3% vs 2020, -32% vs 2019）

ITAMI Passenger Traffic

Domestic passenger traffic: 6.77 million（-12% vs 2020, -59% vs 2019）

KOBE Aircraft Movement

Domestic aircraft movements: 28,167（+7% vs 2020, -10% vs 2019）

KOBE Passenger Traffic

Domestic passenger traffic: 1.63 million（same level as 2020, -52% vs 2019）

International passenger traffic remained limited as border restrictions were tightened again in response to the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, monthly domestic passenger traffic marked a record high at each of the three airports since the pandemic began in Japan in March 2020, backed by an increase in passengers during the year-end holiday period.

International cargo traffic remained strong, hitting an all-time high for a month since the airport’s opening, with 2,674 movements. Cargo volumes also continued to exceed the previous year’s level since January 2021.
