Success Even Before Take-off at Brisbane Airport

  • 2022-08-27

The BNE Careers Expo is just two weeks away, but even before it begins, there’s a positive impact on employment.

One café owner has filled 15 positions in the past fortnight since news broke of Brisbane Airport’s need for 2000 workers now.

"Since the moment people started finding out about the opportunities here at Brisbane Airport, we’ve had a flood of interest, and that has translated directly into interviews and people into jobs," according to George Drivas, Director of Airport Retail Group Australia.

George owns eight cafes and restaurants at Brisbane Airport, and will this week be able to re-open all of them for the first time since the pandemic, as a result of the staff influx.

George was the first employer to sign onto the BNE Careers Expo, and still requires a further 20 people to operate his airport cafés and restaurants including The Aviary, Lord Lamington, Windmill & Co and The Coffee Club.

"This is exactly what we wanted to see. People discovering what job and career options are here across 425 businesses that are located across Brisbane Airport. And there are careers here for the long term, with 10,000 more people needed by the time the 2032 Olympics are here," according to Jane Dionysius, General Manager of Human Resources at BAC.

40 exhibitors have now signed on to be part of the BNE Careers Expo on the 10th of September.

They include Qantas, Alliance, Airservices Australia, Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force. Dozens of other employers are recruiting for ground handling, aerobridge operations, baggage, security, cleaning, hospitality, retail, hotels, childcare, car rental and stores across DFO.

Aviation Australia and Griffith University will also be on hand to discuss aviation training options.

1,500 people have already registered for their free ticket to the event.
