Taoyuan International Airport Renamed Taxiways in Preparation for the Third Runway and Terminal 3
- 2022-10-17
In order to make the airside facilities orderly and easy to identify, the major taxiways "NC", "NP" and "EC" in northern part of Taoyuan International Airport have been renamed "N", "P" and "E" at 6 pm on 21st April 2022, with new Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP) and navigation visual aids coming into effect at the same time.
Taoyuan International Airport Company (TIAC) mentioned that the renaming of the taxiway system in a simpler, more orderly and logical manner is beneficial to Air Traffic Control (ATC) efficiency. More importantly, this change is seen as the preparation for the future expansion projects in terms of planning the third runway system as well as the airside facilities of Terminal 3 which is set to open in two to four years.
A total of 113 signs of 12 taxiways have been renamed in this operation. The installation of new sign boards and other pre-operation work started from 5 am to 5 pm. The north runway (05L/23R) and the adjacent taxiways were even closed at 5 pm for removing the old taxiway name stickers to reveal the new ones. After the final inspection was officially completed at 6 pm, the first landing aircraft was China Airlines CI732 and the first take-off aircraft Fedex FX5017. The overall operation was in good condition.
TIAC pointed out that this renaming operation replaced not only the physical navigation visual aids, but also various system markings and flight documents. Since April 2020, the airport company has held more than 20 meetings assisting the related units to complete cooperative operations. For example, the ATC updated the Tower Automation System (TAS), while the Airside Operation unit renewed the aerodrome charts and conducted education and training such as Change Management of the SMS Hazard and Risk Assessment so as to minimize the risks that might occur during the operation.
Aiming to provide high-quality air transportation services, TIAC continues to update various hardware and software facilities for the future expansion projects and the recovery of the aviation industry in the post-epidemic era.
