Shanghai Pudong International Airport Restored 80% Of Its Cargo Volume

Standing up to challenges of pandemic, Shanghai Pudong International Airport has been gradually returning to its usual busy cargo operation. On May 20, a total of 175 cargo flights were accommodated at Pudong International Airport, handling cargo volume of 7,918 tons, which has recovered to 80% of its normal.

Since May, Shanghai Airport Authority has been balancing efforts of Covid-19 prevention a with endeavors of safe airport operation, to ensure the normal operation of the core functions of Shanghai International Shipping Center and the stability and smooth flow of the global industrial chain and supply chain.

At present, there are totally over 8,200 employees working in close loop state at the cargo handling area of Pudong International Airport, over 800 persons more than that of early April. Key sections of cargo operation chain like ground handling, aircraft maintenance, cargo handling, and forwarders have strengthened their workforce accordingly. Currently there are 48 airlines operating cargo flights at Pudong International Airport and 53 connections have been restored, 7 airlines and 9 connections recovered respectively compared with those in the middle of April. All these efforts contribute to the smooth air cargo transportation to core markets like Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific.

Shanghai Airport Authority, working closely with cargo airlines, took the initiative to predict the cargo volume brought by the resumption of production while promoted cargo airlines to forecast the transport capacity and increased the cargo capacity week by week in accordance. Meanwhile Shanghai Airport Authority, through actively communicating with enterprises to understand their urgent needs, setup service mechanism of “Green Channel”. Bespoke solutions were also made and prioritized for transport of supplies for key enterprises such as integrated circuits, biomedicine and auto parts.

While making good coordination of transport capacity with cargo airlines as well as ensuring smooth ground handling, Shanghai Airport Authority has continued to improve truck transportation efficiency for cargo collection and distribution. In the past week, the transport of freight vehicles at Pudong International Airport has increased significantly, with a daily average of 4,000 vehicles in and out and over 3,000 tons of cargo being trucked every day. This has further improved the cargo operation efficiency of Pudong International Airport, consequently contributing to the overall situation of epidemic prevention as well as economic and social development.
