Macau International Airport (MIA) hosted Media New Year Gathering on 12th February 2025, inviting numerous media representatives to welcome the Chinese New Year and express appreciation for their ongoing oversight and support. Over the past year, Macau International Airport has encountered various challenges due to changes in the external environment. These challenges were successfully navigated with all-out support from the Central and SAR Governments, guidance from the corporate management, the dedication of all employees, and the attention and counsel provided by our media partners.
Mr. Ma Iao Hang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM), highlighted in his address that Macau International Airport served over 7.6 million passengers and facilitated nearly 60,000 flight movements in 2024. Both passenger and aircraft volumes experienced a year-on-year increase of more than 40%. The cargo market also demonstrated remarkable performance, handling over 108,000 tonnes of cargo in 2024, reflecting an annual growth of over 70%. CAM total revenue of 2024 is estimated to be MOP1.475 billion, an increase of 5.1% as compared with previous year, which is estimated to have resumed to 81% of pre-epidemic year 2019.
MIA is actively aligning its infrastructure development with the rapid growth of the local tourism industry, having initiated several major projects last year, including the MIA Expansion and Reclamation Project, as well as the Hengqin Upstream Cargo Terminal Project. In 2025, multiple infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing safety, improving efficiency, and optimizing services will be launched, thereby providing passengers with a safer, more convenient, and comfortable travel experience.
Mr. Chan Weng Hong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of CAM, elaborated on the development plans for Macau International Airport, stating that the airport will continue to advance core projects such as the airport expansion and reclamation, and the construction of the Hengqin upstream cargo terminal which is expected to kick off in the first quarter of this year and be completed by 2026, while systematically implementing infrastructure upgrade initiatives.
These initiatives include three major sub-projects: Runway Pavement Rehabilitation Project, Upgrade Project for the Departure Security Channels and Departure Areas, and Renovation of Transit Corridor and Arrival Channel, all aimed at continually enhancing the service capacity of the regional aviation hub. The Runway Pavement Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to be commenced in the fourth quarter, employing segmented night construction to ensure normal operations of the airport. The renovation of the departure security channels and departure areas is planned to begin in the first quarter, with improvements anticipated by mid-year and completion targeted for the third quarter.
This project will introduce smart security equipment and One ID, aiming to increase security processing capacity by 80%, significantly enhancing passenger handling capabilities. Furthermore, the low-voltage engineering and equipment installation works at Taipa Ferry Terminal Heliport has been commenced in early December of last year, with a six-month construction timeline assuring to align with the overarching objective of the SAR Government to officially inaugurate the heliport in the second half of 2025. In the future, the Taipa Ferry Terminal and the Heliport, as well as Macau International Airport will achieve seamless connectivity, facilitating coordinated sea and air transport, so as to enhance travel convenience for passengers in the surrounding areas, thereby providing critical transportation support for the development of the Greater Bay Area.
In light of the surrounding environment and industry dynamics, it is anticipated that passenger volume in 2025 could reach 8.5 million, with a total of 65 thousand flight movements expected and cargo volume reaching 113 thousand tonnes. CAM will continue to adhere to the core principle of “Safety, Efficiency, and Effectiveness”, pursuing growth in limited space with a focus on enhancing the seamless operation of the airport’s safety systems while optimizing operational efficiency to elevate the passenger service experience. To cope with the SAR Government’s initiatives promoting the comprehensive development of the tourism and leisure industry, solidifying Macau’s position as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure.
