Direct Newcastle to Cairns flights announced following record-breaking passenger growth at Newcastle Airport

  • 2024-11-26

Tropical travel options for the Hunter are set to kick off with Jetstar today announcing the return of direct Newcastle (NTL) to Cairns (CNS) flights in 2025, following a record-breaking season in 2024.

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr. Peter Cock said our region loves tropic leisure getaways and passenger numbers are on the rise, highlighting the overwhelming demand for this route, which saw 27,600 passengers travel through Newcastle Airport during the 2024 season; an impressive 84% increase compared to 2023.

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr. Peter Cock

“It’s a great vote of confidence from our region, seeing such strong growth in passenger numbers reflects the demand for easy and accessible travel to amazing places and shows just how much this connection to Cairns is valued,” Dr. Cock said. “We are working hard to provide the people of the Hunter with more travel options and are proud this popular route with Jetstar is one of the first to be announced.”

Jetstar’s Newcastle to Cairns flights will resume from 2 July 2025 and continue through to 24 October, coinciding with the new terminal’s grand opening in August. The direct flights are timed to take advantage of Cairns’ best weather and bustling tourist season, making them an ideal choice for a mid-year tropical escape, without the need for connecting flights.

Choosing cocktails over commuting, Newcastle Airport’s newest flight offering means Hunter travellers can trade their monotonous M1 journey for an easier trip to the airport and a quick flight that’s under three hours, getting them poolside, beachside or tableside, with favourite drink in hand sooner. With fares starting from $109 one way, it is recommended to book early to avoid disappointment. Tropical travel trippers can also take advantage of Newcastle Airport’s convenient and affordable parking options by booking online at parking.newcastleairport.com.au, securing the best rates for long-stay options or premium spots closer to the terminal.

What are you waiting for? Slip into your singlet, slap on your double-pluggers, and let the good times roll in the far north! Transform an ordinary weekend into a Cairns vacay or stay for longer for a greater Cairn’s connection.

Jetstar’s Executive Manager, Customer, Jenn Armor says it’s great to be providing more low fares between the two destinations.

“These are the only direct flights between Cairns and Newcastle, allowing customers in the south to escape up to tropical weather in winter, while giving residents of Far North Queensland easy access the Hunter Valley wine region.

“To celebrate the relaunch of this popular seasonal service, we’re offering one-way fares between the two destinations from just $109 at jetstar.com. We thank Newcastle Airport for supporting the route, allowing our customers to take off more with low fares.”
