Fiji's Nadi International Airport achieves Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation

  • 2025-04-22

Fiji’s primary gateway to the world, the Nadi International Airport has attained Level 4 Transformation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation, becoming the first airport in the Blue Pacific region to achieve this level of recognition.

Fiji Airports chief executive Mesake Nawari said this achievement reflects sheer commitment and the unwavering support and understanding of Fiji Airports Board of Directors, Management, staff and stakeholders in driving sustainability across its airport operations.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is an Airports Council International (ACI) green initiative for its members and runs independent assessments of airports around the world and their efforts to manage and reduce emissions. Fiji Airports earned the level of Transformation in recognition of its exception work in aligning its carbon management with global climate goals to reach absolute emission reductions and establishing related partnerships with its business partners, as part of the Global airport’s industry’s response to the challenge of climate change.

The Fiji Airports board chairman Hasmukh Patel and Mr Nawari received the award recognition in Delhi, India last week. “This accomplishment underscores our role in the global effort to combat climate change, Mr Nawari said.

“Recognizing that our infrastructure is vulnerable to climate change events, we are mobilizing resources to do our part in addressing this critical issue.
“We are punching above our weight and to be recognised alongside bigger international airports signifies our commitment to reducing our carbon emissions and the active steps undertaken to minimise its environmental impact.”

Stefano Baronci, Director General, ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, said: “We congratulate Nadi International Airport for its remarkable achievement in attaining Level 4 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation, becoming the first airport in the Blue Pacific region to reach this significant milestone. By establishing itself as a leader in carbon management, Nadi International Airport displays a robust commitment to fostering a sustainable future. This accomplishment aligns perfectly with our industry's collective vision of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”
After achieving Level 3 "Optimisation" in Airport Carbon Accreditation in 2020, Fiji Airports has now reached Level 4 “Transformation” in Airport Carbon Accreditation recognition, thanks to its ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Nadi International Airport is rated Level 4 Transformation alongside Japan’s Narita International Airport, Dubai International Airport, King Khalid International Airport and Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan.

Under Mr. Nawari's leadership and the continued support of the board, staff and stakeholders, numerous sustainability initiatives launched over the past year are actively working to reduce emissions and further enhance the airport's environmental performance.

These sustainability projects included the procurement of 14 electric vehicles powered by solar system at the Nadi International Airport with surplus energy in a battery bank powers streetlights in the Nadi International Airport car park area and external signage at night.

Additionally, four domestic airport terminals in Savusavu, Matei, Rotuma and the temporary Labasa terminal building are now fully solar-powered following successful solar panel installations conducted by the Renewable Energy Special Projects team in recent months.

The installation project also included solar works at the CEO’s official residence and all streetlights around the Fiji Airports compound, now fully solar powered.
