To Handle Future Traffic Growth, the Airport Runway is Fully Renovated

  • 15 Nov 2018

Today, a ceremony was held at Phnom Penh International Airport to celebrate the completion of the renovation of its total 3,000-metre runway. Stakeholders of the project attended the event and witnessed monks sprinkle holy water on one stretch of the runway, a tradition that resonates with Khmer blessing rites.

Despite operational and logistics challenges as the runway had remained open throughout the works, the project delivered in a record-time of 7 months. Well-trained and experienced teams carried-out the works during night time and took advantage of 6 hour windows to lay asphalt on 150-metre portions in average every night.

Benefits of this airside infrastructure are multi-faceted, including:

  • Increase of the runway safety and improvement of its comfort for aircraft landings and take-offs
  • New line marking
  • New blast protection and shoulders overlay
  • Upgrade of the aeronautical ground lighting and use of LED lights to minimize carbon emission

The US$ 12-million full renovation is part of a continuous investment program for the airport development, which started 4 years ago with the extension and overhauling of the terminal, the car park system modernization and new services introduction such as multi-language signage and information digital screens, new website and phone apps, and the diversification of commercial and Food & Beverage offerings.

Éric DELOBEL, CEO of Cambodia Airports, said: “Investing in major project like this extensive renovation is a vote of confidence. Phnom Penh International Airport is equipped with a runway system that can accommodate traffics in the next 10-15 years. We are fully confident in the country’s growth momentum, especially with visitors who will keep on flowing in. To handle them now and in coming decades, our company is investing in facilities, services and our human resources.”
